Project is dedicated to the preservation of 35mm

At the Estonian Pavilion in Cannes, Naomi Kawase has announced 60 Seconds Of Solitude In Year Zero - a non-profit project dedicated to the preservation of 35mm film.

There will be 60 different directors involved including Kawase, Mark Boswell, Albert Serra, Mika Taanila, Malcolm Le Grice, Kari Yli-Annala, Ilppo Pohjola, Ishii Gakuryu, Shinji Aoyama, Joshua and Ben Safdie and Pen-Ek Ratanaruang.

The funding for the project is provided by European Capital of Culture Tallinn 2011, the Estonian Ministry of Culture and EU-Japan Fest Committee.

The film will only screen once in Tallinn Bay at the end of August 2011, with no duplicates made.

Finnish film critic and former Cannes jury member Peter von Bagh has agreed to curate the event.

In other Estonian film news, Black Market Online, the Tallinn Black Nights backed online market portal, is extending its reach. BMO has finalized deals with NonStop Entertainment for a one-year test run for its new virtual market booths, and has newly partnered with the Finnish Film Foundation, the Iceland Film Foundation, the Azerbaijan Film Foundation, the Kazakhstan Film Foundation and the Georgian Film Foundation to present their local films on the platform.

As of spring 2011 the Estonian Film Foundation will move its whole international promotion to the BMO platform eliminating the need for DVD screeners, and last week Allfilm, the largest Estonian production house, adopted the system for hosting co-production projects and its back catalogue.

BMO will also be available in Russian and English from June 2011.
