Local comedy sensation Mr Bones continues to break records in South Africa. Earning over $1.75m (Rand 20m) at the South African box office so far the film is already the highest grossing local film of all-time. On release less than five weeks Mr Bones can also claim the record as the fastest film in South African history to pass the R20m mark.

The Videovision Entertainment production, released through UIP, stars Leon Schuster - the country's biggest box office star - and was made entirely in South Africa with local talent and crews on a budget of $3.1m (R35m). Mr Bones also holds the record for biggest local opening in the territory ($289,106) - third highest of all-time behind Mission: Impossible 2 and The World Is Not Enough.

Meanwhile, Steven Soderbergh's ensemble heist caper Ocean's Eleven continues to play well in Italy where it has climbed into the top spot in its third week. Opening in third place on Dec 21 behind Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone and seasonal local title Merry Christmas, Ocean's Eleven moved up to second in its second week and first this week. Adding a further $2.2m from 308 screens for a resounding screen average of $7,302, the Warner Bros distributed film has now taken $10.7m in the territory.

Featuring an all-star cast including George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Andy Garcia, Don Cheadle and Julia Roberts the film has also played two weeks in Iceland where distributor Samfilm has grossed $349,820 from just 7 screens in 10 days. Ocean's Eleven opened in Australia, Germany and The Netherlands yesterday (Jan 10).

One of the few territories left to have received neither Harry Potter nor The Lord Of The Rings, Poland saw Alejandro Amenabar's The Others launch into its latest number one position. Taking $207,689 (ZLO 811,629) from 70 screens for distributor Monolith the Nicole Kidman title displaced 12-week holdover Amelie from the top of the chart. However both Amelie, which has now grossed $1.7m in the territory, and fellow opener The Man Who Wasn't There played to stronger averages (Amelie: $71,983 from 24 for $2,999 average; Man Who: $40,361 from 11 for $3,669 average) than The Others ($2,967).
