Alex Garland has been set to write and direct a live-action film based on video game Elden Ring for A24 and Bandai Namco Entertainment.

Elden Ring is a fantasy role-playing game based on a story by George R R Martin, the author whose books were the basis for Game Of Thrones. The game, created under the guidance of FromSoftware’s Hidetaka Miyazaki, was released in 2022 and has shipped more than 30m units worldwide. A spin-off game, Elden Ring Nightreign, is being launched worldwide this month.

The film version of Elden Ring will be produced by Peter Rice with Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich from DNA, Martin and Vince Gerardis.

Garland most joined forces with Ray Mendoza to write and direct Warfare, released last month by A24. A24 also produced and distributed Garland’s Civil War and Ex Machina and distributed Men

Garland has recently teamed with Danny Boyle to write DNA’s 28 Years Later, set for release by Columbia Pictures next month. The film is the third entry in the series that began in 2002 with 28 Days Later, written by Garland and directed by Boyle.
