‘Ally’

Bong Joon Ho’s debut animated feature Ally has been set for release in July 2027 in South Korea, according to production company Barunson C&C.

An exact release date is yet to be disclosed for the underwater-set feature but it was previously confirmed that it will open theatrically in France on July 14, 2027.

It further fuels speculation that the film is aiming for a premiere at Cannes, where director Bong won the Palme d’Or with Parasite in 2019.

The latest from the acclaimed filmmaker is a family adventure that follows a curious piglet squid who lives in the depths of the South Pacific Ocean. She dreams of one day seeing the sun and becoming the star of a wildlife documentary. But when a mysterious aircraft sinks into the ocean, Ally takes a journey to the surface where encounters with the humans above reshape both worlds.

Bong, who co-write the script with Jason Yu, has been developing the project since 2019.

Financing and distribution are handled by South Korea’s CJ ENM and Penture Invest alongside French studio Pathé, with Korea’s Barunson C&C overseeing production.

Pathé handles distribution in France, Benelux, Switzerland and West Africa, while CJ and Penture will distribute in South Korea, Vietnam, Turkey and Indonesia. Pathé handles international sales excluding Japan, China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, which will be represented by CJ and Penture.

Neon is distributing the film in the US after working with Bong on Parasite, which went on to scoop four Academy Awards including best picture.

Ally marks the first feature from Bong since 2025’s Mickey 17, an English-language science fiction film for Warner Bros, which starred Robert Pattinson and premiered at the Berlinale.
