UK-Canadian visual effects studio Cinesite has acquired a majority stake in Balkan VFX firm FX3X.

FX3X has offices in Skopje, North Macedonia and Belgrade, Serbia. The company is currently in production on James Mangold’s Indiana Jones 5 and David Lowery’s Peter Pan and Wendy, both for Disney, plus season two of Paramount+ series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

The existing FX3X management team will continue to lead the company, with the support of Cinesite. The latter company now has over 2000 employees, having previously acquired fellow VFX firms Trixter in 2018 and Imagine Engine in 2015. Further acquisitions include Canadian animation studios L’Atelier Animation and Squeeze Animation.

Next month FX3X will launch VFX Nest, an entry-level paid training programme to introduce Macedonian students to industry techniques, supported by Cinesite. 60 students will undertake the training from September 2022 until January 2023.

FX3X was founded in 1997 by Milivoje Gjorgjevikj and Kristijan Danilovski. “We have been creative allies with Cinesite previously, so joining forces with them will allow us to unlock the full potent of our business and the amazing home-grown talent we have access to in our region,” said Gjorgjevikj.
