Hong Kong-based Edko Films has secured international sales rights to Yeung Leung Chuen’s We Are Born Good, ahead of its world premiere at Toronto International Film Festival.
The film, which will play in TIFF’s Discovery section, centres on a feud between a man and woman. What begins as a mishap at a restaurant leads to a cycle of revenge that begins to harm those closest to them.
The cast is led by Yeung Wai Lun, who won acclaim for his role in 2022 box office hit The Sparring Partner, and Chung Suet Ying, who won best actress at the Golden Horse Awards for 2024’s The Way We Talk and is also known for Time and The Lyricist Wannabe.
Further cast include Lo Chun Yip (Time Still Turns The Pages), Kearen Pang (Mama’s Affair), Ng Wing Sze (Mad Fate) and Yan Yuk Yu Amy.
The story, also written by director Yeung, was inspired by a widely circulated CCTV clip in Hong Kong in which a market aunt and a vendor uncle had a verbal altercation which led to a physical struggle.
“When I first saw this footage, I also found it ridiculous and amusing; but then I thought: why?,” said Yeung. “Why would these two individuals escalate a trivial matter into a full-blown fight? What kind of people are they? What are their lives like off-camera?
“In today’s rapidly changing and unpredictable world, urban work is high-pressure and fast-paced, making life difficult. Perhaps we often live in a state of “tipping point,” where with just a little provocation, things can easily explode. We Are Born Good aims to depict the stories behind those living restlessly in our city.”
Yeung has previously been known as a screenwriter, with credits including Eric Tsang’s 2022 drama Hong Kong Family, which was selected for Busan. He also won best director at Hong Kong’s Fresh Wave International Short Film Festival with The Bridge in 2018.
We Are Born Good is produced by Patricia Cheng, who has produced multiple films by renowned director Sylvia Chang, including Love Education and Murmur Of The Hearts.
