Greece will be the country of honour at the 2027 Cannes Marché du Film, set to run from May 11-19.
Under the banner Ride the Greek Wave, the market will host dedicated events, showcases and networking opportunities to highlight leading Greek directors, producers and executives.
Greece has also been a longstanding partner of the market at Cannes through its presence at the International Village and its close collaboration with the Hellenic Film and Audiovisual Center and Thessaloniki International Film Festival.
The country has strengthened its position as a filming destination over the past decade with its incentives, locations and production ecosystem. Its audiovisual sector contributes $2.2bn (€1.9bn) to Greece’s economy, supports approximately 44,000 jobs and comprises nearly 3,000 companies across production, post-production, animation and related creative services.
Greek filmmakers who have had films selected at Cannes in recent years include Yorgos Lanthimos, who won the Un Certain Regard award in 2009 with Dogtooth and has played in Competition with The Lobster, The Killing Of A Sacred Deer and Kinds Of Kindness. This year, Titanic Ocean from Greece’s Konstantina Kotzamani played in Un Certain Regard.
The Marché’s country of honour initiative has run since 2021 and has previously featured India, Spain, Switzerland, Brazil and Japan.
“With the remarkable momentum of its film and audiovisual industry today, Greece embodies the spirit of creativity, openness, and international collaboration that the Marché du Film seeks to celebrate through its Country of Honour initiative,” said Guillaume Esmiol, executive director of the Marché du Film.
Leonidas Christopoulos, CEO of Ekkomed - Hellenic Film & Audiovisual Center, added: “This distinction is both a significant recognition and a unique opportunity to showcase Greece’s vibrant creative ecosystem on the international stage. Today, Greece is a place where cinematic heritage meets contemporary talent, innovation, and international collaboration.”
The 2027 Cannes Film Festival will take place from May 11-22.
