Streaming sequel Happy Gilmore 2 has notched the biggest ever US opening weekend for a Netflix film, according to the company.
The Adam Sandler comedy, a follow-up to Sandler’s 1996 theatrical hit, was not released in cinemas but had its streaming debut last Friday (July 25). In its first three days the film amassed 46.7m views, easily topping Netflix’s global top ten movie chart for the week of July 21-27.
The streaming giant did not break out a US viewing tally for the film but said the sequel was its most viewed film of the week in 47 countries including the US, the UK, Germany, Spain and Italy. The comedy was in the company’s top ten in a total of 88 countries.
The launch of the film also drove viewing on Netflix of the original Happy Gilmore, which scored 11.4m views for the week, putting it in third place on the streamer’s global chart.
In the sequel, Sandler returns as the golfing title character, with a supporting cast including Julie Bowen, Ben Stiller, and Christopher McDonald, all of whom also appeared in the original. Original co-writer Tim Herlihy wrote the sequel and Kyle Newacheck directed.
Second place on Netflix’s global chart for the week went to animation KPop Demon Hunters, with 26.3m views.
