‘Enys Men’, ‘Geographies Of Solitude’

Mark Jenkin’s Cannes Directors’ Fortnight title Enys Men and Jacquelyn Mills’ Berlinale Forum documentary Geographies Of Solitude are among eight features programmed in Red Sea: New Vision, a new programme strand in Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea International Film Festival (RSIFF).

The section has no geographical boundaries, and is aiming to “celebrate films that stand out, addressing unique topics with a lens that will challenge and delight” according to the festival.

The selection includes one world premiere: Lost Treasures Of Arabia: The Ancient City Of Dadan, by directors Dirk Verheye and Inti Calfat. The documentary follows a team of international archeologists attempting to decipher the mysteries of the ancient city of Dadan in North West Arabia, in the area that is now Saudi Arabia.

Mills’ Geographies Of Solitude, a look at the life of environmentalist Zoe Lucas who has lived for over 40 years on a remote Canadian island, will have its MENA premiere at RSIFF.

Further titles include Lebanese director Karim Kassem’s documentary Octopus, a memoir of the filmmaker’s experiences in Beirut following the explosion in the city in August 2020.

“One of our aims at the RedSeaIFF is to inspire the next generation of filmmaking through highlighting a huge variety of films that challenge the way we view cinema,” said Kaleem Aftab, director of international programming for RSIFF. “Adding this new strand of programming to the second edition of the festival intends to do exactly that – lift up new voices and highlight fresh perspectives on filmmaking that encourage us to think differently.”

RSIFF will take place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia from December 1-10.
