EXCLUSIVE: Inside Out, Canada’s 2SLGBTQ+ film festival and content promoter, has unveiled the five feature film projects selected for its ninth annual International Finance Forum (IFF).
Set for May 29 and 30 at Toronto’s TIFF Lightbox venue, IFF connects queer storytellers with industry decision makers from around the world. This year’s projects are in the late development and packaging stages.
From the US comes A World Of My Own, a western romance from first-time feature director Niki Ang and producers Andrew Ahn and Laura Scarano. Written by Ang, the project follows a young woman fighting to save her family ranch who has a summer romance with the rebellious daughter of a neighbouring ranch family.
Don’t Let Him Get To You is a Canadian comedy-drama with Tatiana Maslany set to star and produce, alongside Andria Wilson Mirza, for writer-director Ben Lewis. The film centres on a woman with a beautiful home, a loving husband and a thriving career who begins to unravel when her estranged brother starts spending time with her best friend.
Here For The Right Reasons is a US comedy from writer-director Susie Yankou and producer Allison Tate about a masculine bisexual woman who poses as her femme twin sister trying to try to win the big prize on a reality TV show.
From the UK comes The Young And The Dopeness, feature directing debut of writer-director Nosa Eke. Produced by Nell Whitley, the project follows a masculine-presenting female teen on a daring quest for a legendary sneaker.
When The River Splits Open is a US/China romantic drama from writer-director Jess X Snow, another first-time feature director. Lucie Zhang and Huang Lu are attached to star in the story of a rebellious non-binary Chinese-American making a surreal journey through rural China. Petrus van Staden produces.
IFF participants will get the chance to take in-person and virtual meetings with representatives from companies including A24, Bleecker Street, Neon, Netflix, CBC Films, Elevation, mk2, Mr Smith, Parallax Films and Protagonist.
IFF producer Jan Nathanson commented: “At a disruptive time for the film industry, we are so happy that we can create a space where amazing queer creators and their stories are front and centre. In our ninth iteration, Inside Out’s IFF brings the creative teams together with 20-plus industry executives actively looking for queer content. As with previous years, relationships will be created, and deals will be set in motion.”
