Sade Malone, Brían F. O’Byrne

Production has started in Ireland on Twig, a retelling of the Greek tragedy Antigone, that is directed by Irish filmmaker Marian Quinn.

The five-week shoot is now underway in Dublin. The feature stars Sade Malone in the titular role and Brían F. O’Byrne, and is set in Dublin’s inner city, where an ancient city wall cordons off a neighbourhood which is rife with drugs. When the local crime lord, Leon, played by O’Byrne, vows to let her brother Paulie’s body rot in the street, Twig sets out to do the right thing.

It is produced by Irish producers Ruth Carter of Blue Ink Films and Tommy Weir for Janey Pictures. Twig is funded by Screen Ireland, BAI, RTÉ and Wildcard Distribution.

Wildcard Distribution will release the film in Irish cinemas in 2023, and acquired the title directly from Blue Ink Films.

Writer-director Quinn’s previous credits include coming-of-age film 32A, that won best first feature at the Galway Film Fleadh. Quinn said of the shoot: “We have an extraordinary cast, crew at the top of their game. I couldn’t be happier to be back shooting this in Dublin now.”
