EXCLUSIVE: Malaysian actress and presenter Jolene Tiong will lead Vijay Chauhan’s My Indian Boyfriend: the Golden Mile, a UK remake of Hong Kong romantic drama My Indian Boyfriend.

My Indian Boyfriend: the Golden Mile follows the relationship between Krishna, a British Indian graduate searching for direction; and Jasmine (played by Tiong), a Chinese architecture student studying in the UK.

Through their brief but transformative relationship in Leicester, the pair navigate ambition identity and the difficult choices between love and personal dreams.

The film is aiming to shoot in Leicester, UK this summer; with casting for the lead male role at a final stage.

My Indian Boyfriend is looking for finance and co-production partners at Hong Kong’s Filmart this week.

The project is developed by the UK-China Film Collab NGO, in collaboration with De Montfort University and co-produced with ADA Collective.

UK-China Film Collab founder Hiu Man Chan is an executive producer on the film, with Sri Kishore, director of the 2021 original Hong Kong film, Amita Krishna, and Djonny Chen.

The film is a remake of 2021’s My Indian Boyfriend, a Hong Kong romantic drama about the romance between a Hong Kong girl and an Indian boy which faces racial bias and cultural clashes.

“Anyone who has ever left home to chase a dream understands the quiet guilt Jasmine carries,” said Tiong. “What resonated with me most about her was the emotional honesty of that journey — she shares a close bond with her mother, yet chooses to pursue her ambitions abroad, and that tension between love, responsibility, and personal dreams felt incredibly real to me.

Chan, who is also an academic at De Montfort University, said Tiong’s casting “demonstrates our ambition in creating cross-cultural stories as a new collaboration model with Asia.”

Tiong has worked in TV presenting for Malaysia’s national broadcaster Astro, as well as taking part in beauty pageants. She has recently built her career as an environmental advocate and digital creator.
