Kit Connor and Taika Waititi will lead the voice cast of Netflix’s animated feature Charlie Vs The Chocolate Factory, which will launch on the streamer in 2027.
Inspired by Roald Dahl’s 1964 novel and set in the present day, Connor will voice a new character named Charlie Paley, while Waititi will voice chocolatier Willy Wonka. The film will feature a new story, original songs, and new characters, as well as some that featured in the novel.
Netflix has released a first look at the film, above. DC League Of Super-Pets director Jared Stern and Spirit Untamed director Elaine Bogan are directing the Netflix Animation Studio Original title.
Producers are Aron Warner and Timothy Yoo, with Waititi as executive producer. Animation is by Sony Pictures Imageworks.
Set in contemporary London, the film will follow Wonka, who has spent the years since his Golden Ticket contest behind bars for turning a child into a blueberry.
Having served his time, he returns to his factory determined to add sweetness to a bitter world; only for teenager Charlie Paley and his friends to stand in his way, looking to nab a priceless Wonka Bar and save themselves from eviction from their homes. Like others before them, the kids then discover a fantastical world within the factory.
“I was immediately caught by the early concept art, and the directors’ vision for the film - capturing the spirit and heart that made the original story so special, whilst imbuing it with something so fresh and unique,” said Connor. “It’s such a fun representation of the London that I know.”
“Our directors, Jared and Elaine, have a bold vision befitting this new adventure whilst remaining sympathetic to the legacy,” said Waititi. “Willy Wonka is so special to me, and the opportunity to voice such an iconic, eccentric candy genius – if a little mischievous at times – is hugely exciting.”
Stern and Bogan described it as “a privilege” to be making the film. “And how sweet to do it like never before via the magic of animation, creating a Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory that’s more deliciously unhinged than your wildest imagination. If we do a rotten job, you can throw us down a rubbish chute!”
“With their singular comedic and visual flair, Jared and Elaine have concocted a delightful adventure that remains true to the spirit of Dahl’s beloved novel while imagining a brand new story that introduces this world to a new generation,” said Hannah Minghella, head of feature animation and family film at Netflix Animation Studios.
The animated feature is Netflix’s latest Roald Dahl adaptation since acquiring the Roald Dahl Story Company in 2021, following previous titles including 2024 anthology film The Wonderful Story Of Henry Sugar And Three More.
Connor was named a Screen UK-Ireland Star of Tomorrow in 2023.
