‘Holy Spider’

Eduardo Casanova’s mother-son horror La Pieta has been named best picture and serial killer thriller Holy Spider’s Ali Abbasi best director in Fantastic Fest’s Main Competition awards.

Carlota Pereda’s Piggy won best picture in the Horror Features category, while best directors award went to Mike Mendez, Demian Rugna, Eduardo Sanchez, and Gigi Saul Guerrero and Alejandro Brugués for Satanic Hispanics.

In Next Wave, Léa Mysius’s The Five Devils won best picture and Thomas Hardiman was named best director for Medusa Deluxe.

Mark Mylod’s TIFF world premiere The Menu starring Ralph Fiennes and Anya Taylor-Joy won the audience award.

Kevin Ralston’s Hubbards won best picture in Shorts With Legs and Velasco Broca’s Alegrias Riojanas earned a special mention. In the Short Fuse category Ringworms by Will Lee won best picture and Ruwan Heggelman’s Gnomes got a special mention.

Fantastic Shorts awards have gone to Vedran Rupic’s The Diamond for best picture with a special mention for A Man Trembles by Mark Chua and Lam Li Shuen (Emoumie). Drawn And Quartered winners were Boyoung Kim’s A Guitar In The Bucket for best picture, while Andrea Gatopoulos’s Happy New Year, Jim got a special mention.

“We really gave our jury members a tough job this year. We have no idea how they were able to choose between so many amazing films,” said festival director Lisa Dreyer said. “We are so appreciative to all our filmmakers for sharing their phenomenal films with our audience, and the Jurors’ choices truly embody the wild and wonderful cinematic excellence we love to champion at Fantastic Fest.”

The festival in Austin, Texas, runs through September 29.
