EXCLUSIVE: Mubi is expanding into theatrical distribution in Italy.
The company has appointed Gabriele D’Andrea as VP, managing director of Mubi Italia, to lead its move into theatrical distribution in the country.
D’Andrea joins Mubi after 13 years at Lucky Red, where he led theatrical strategy and distribution. He is also the CEO of Circuito Cinema, a leading network of independent and arthouse cinemas in Italy – a role he will continue alongside his new position at Mubi.
The Italy move will complement Mubi’s existing theatrical distribution operations across North America, Latin America, UK, Germany and Benelux. Its Benelux distribution is handled via Cinéart, which Mubi acquired a majority stake in in 2024.
Mubi Italia will officially launch its theatrical slate in Italy this year with the release of Lynne Ramsay’s Die, My Love, starring Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson. The film, which premiered in Competition at Cannes, was recently acquired by Mubi in a multi-territory deal covering North America, Latin America, UK, Italy, Germany, Spain, Benelux, Turkey, India and Australia.
Die, My Love is the first of several Italian theatrical releases planned by Mubi. It will be followed by the releases of Oliver Laxe’s Sirât, which was awarded the jury prize at Cannes and Kelly Reichardt’s The Mastermind, starring Josh O’Connor, which also premiered in Competition at Cannes.
Mubi’s expansion of its theatrical distribution activities comes after a busy Cannes. The auteur and global cinema-focused company was the leading buyer of Competition films at this year’s festival.
Mubi has had a presence in Italy since 2021, when it launched its streaming platform in the country.
