Nick Reiner pleaded not guilty in Los Angeles on Monday to murdering his parents, the Hollywood director Rob Reiner and his wife and photographer Michelle Singer Reiner.

Reiner, 32, wore brown prison uniform in a brief appearance at Los Angeles Superior Court in the Downtown district and waived his right to an expedited preliminary hearing and was not granted bail. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for April 29.

The defendant is charged with two counts of first-degree murder and could face life imprisonment without parole or the death penalty if found guilty. LA District Attorney Nathan Hochman said outside the courthouse that his team had not yet decided whether to seek the death penalty.

Last month Reiner’s attorney Alan Jackson withdrew without citing reasons prior to the initial date of the arraignment, which was subsequently postponed until Monday. Reiner is represented by an attorney from the public defender’s office.

The Reiners were found dead at their Los Angeles home in December. Nick Reiner is the middle of three children.

Conan O’Brien, the US comedian and Oscar host who held a holiday party at his home attended by the Reiners the night before their bodies were discovered, spoke for the first time about the tragedy over the weekend.

“I knew Rob and Michele, and then increasingly got closer and closer to them, and I was seeing them a lot,” O’Brien said in an interview. “It’s just so awful.”
