Filming has commenced on the feature adaptation of BBC’s Bafta-winning comedy series People Just Do Nothing, the mockumentary about pirate radio station Kurupt FM.
Entitled People Just Do Nothing: Big In Japan, the film is shooting in Japan and the UK for six weeks. It will be released in cinemas in the UK and Ireland by Universal Pictures International in August 2020.
A first-look image from the film has been released, shown above.
It will pick up with the members of pirate radio station Kurupt FM, who head to Japan when one of their songs is used on a popular game show there.
Jack Clough is directing the film, which is written by Steve Stamp and Allan Mustafa, with additional material by Asim Chaudhry, Hugo Chegwin and Lily Brazier. All six previously worked on the TV series, which premiered on BBC Three in 2014 and has run for five seasons.
Mustafa, Chegwin, Chaudhry, Stamp and Brazier will all resume their on-screen roles, alongside Dan Sylvester, Hitomi Souno and Ken Yamamura.
Claire Jones and Tim Sealey are producing for Roughcut; executive producers are Ash Atalla, Jon Petrie and Christos Michaels for Roughcut, Rose Garnett for BBC Films and Shane Allen, controller of BBC Comedy.
The film was developed by BBC Films and BBC Comedy, with financing from BBC Films and Focus Features.
The TV series won a Bafta and Royal Television Society award for Best Scripted Comedy in 2017.
