Universal and DreamWorks Animation have pushed Shrek 5 from December 23, 2026, to June 30, 2027, to give the upcoming entry in the $2.9bn-grossing franchise a summer box office run.
The returning cast features Mike Myers as Shrek, Eddie Murphy as Donkey, and Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona, alongside franchise newcomer Zendaya.
Conrad Vernon and Walt Dohrn are directing. Vernon helmed Shrek 2, while Dohrn was a writer and artist on the second and third films, and head of story on the fourth. Brad Ableson is co-director and served as co-director on Minions: The Rise Of Gru. Gina Shay returns as producer alongside Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri.
The most recent Shrek film, Shrek Forever After, earned more than $752m worldwide in 2010. The franchise started in 2001 and has spawned two Puss In Boots spin-offs.
As things stand the shuffle puts Shrek 5 on the calendar five days after Sony Pictures Animation’s Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse, and bumps Illumination’s Untitled Illumination Event Film to April 16, 2027, replacing Untitled Universal Event Film.
