Bertrand Tavernier’s The Princess of Montpensier has been set to close the 34th Montreal World Film Festival on September 6, with the French director in attendance.

Set in sixteenth century France, the film is a love story set against a backdrop of religious wars between Catholics and Protestants.

Lambert Wilson, Mélanie Thierry, Grégoire Leprince-Ringuet, Gaspard Ulliel and Raphaël Personnaz star.

Axia Films is distributing the film in Canada, with a release planned for early next year.

Making the announcement, Montreal World Festival president Serge Losique described Tavernier as “not only a great director, he is a living encyclopedia of the cinema, a man who embodies the full meaning of cineaste.

“That is why we are especially proud that his latest feature, which is set in a troubled era in the history of France, will grace our screen as the Festival’s closing film.”
