Tom Cruise will receive an Honorary Award at the 16th Governors Awards on November 16, the Academy said on Tuesday.

The leading man and producer is one of four honourees alongside fellow Honorary Award receipients Debbie Allen and Wynn Thomas, and this year’s Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award honouree Dolly Parton.

Cruise’s star power, stuntwork and dedication to the theatrical model have kept him in the limelight for decades and he famously played a large part in kick-starting box office during the pandemic when Top Gun: Maverick opened in late spring 2022 and went on to gross $1.5bn worldwide.

Films in which Cruise has starred have earned more than $11bn at the global box office and he can be seen in Paramount’s current release Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.

The actor and producer’s on-screen credits include the Top Gun films, A Few Good Men, Interview With The Vampire, Risky Business, Collateral, and Eyes Wide Shut. He earned lead actor Oscar nominations for Born On The Fourth Of July and Jerry Maguire, a supporting actor nod for Magnolia, and a best picture nomination as a producer on Top Gun: Maverick.

Veteran Oscar ceremony choreographer and Amistad producer Allen will also receive an honorary Oscar, as will production designer Thomas, whose credits include She’s Gotta Have It, A Beautiful Mind, and Malcolm X.

The Honorary Award recognises “extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences in any discipline, or for outstanding service to the Academy”.

The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award is also an Oscar statuette and is presented to Hollywood figures renowned for “promoting human welfare and contributing to rectifying inequities”. Parton’s charitable and philanthropic organisations include the Dollywood Foundation to inspire children in her home state of Tennessee to achieve educational success, and literacy programme Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.

Besides her extensive music career, the artist has starred in such films as Nine To Five and Steel Magnolias, and earned two original song Oscar nominations for Nine To Five, and Travelin’ Thru from Transamerica.
