
EXCLUSIVE: Media Asia has closed a string of deals at the Cannes market on the sequel to Soi Cheang’s Twilight Of The Warriors: Walled In, now in production in Hong Kong with Daniel Wu joining the cast.
Twilight Of The Warriors: The Final Chapter has been presold to France (Metropolitan Filmexport), Germany (Plaion Pictures), Japan (The Klockworx) and South Kora (Contents Panda) as well as Vietnam (Skyline Media), Indonesia (PT Primacinema), Singapore (Shaw Renters) and Malaysia (Brilliant Pictures). Further deals are in the works.
As filming began only in mid-April, no footage is yet available for buyers but the response has been overwhelming, according to sources.
Wu, who most recently starred in Hong Kong action thriller prequel Cold War 1994, joins the cast. Cold War 1994 marked Wu’s first appearance in a Hong Kong film since the pandemic after his relocation to Hollywood, where his credits included Tomb Raider and HBO’s Westworld.
As previously announced, Raymond Lam, Terrance Lau, German Cheung and Tony Wu will reprise their roles. The story is set in the early 1990s revolving around the demolition of the notorious slum at the Kowloon Walled City.
Like the original, the follow-up will draw from the novel City Of Darkness by Yuyi and is adapted by Au Kin Yee and Shum Kwan Sin, who also worked on Cheang’s 2021 noir thriller Limbo. Angus Chan’s Entertaining Power owns the film rights to the novel.
John Chong and Wilson Yip return as producers, along with production designer Kenneth Mak and action choreographer Kenji Tanigaki.
Twilight Of The Warriors: Walled In played at Cannes 2024 in Midnight Screenings received its international premiere at Cannes in the Midnight Screenings section in 2024 and went on to become that year’s second biggest film at the Hong Kong box office with takings of nearly $14m (HK$108.44m).
Made on a budget of $40m, it went on to gross more than $111m worldwide and was Hong Kong’s entry to the Oscars.
Set in the British Colonial Hong Kong of the 1980s, the first film follows a troubled youth named Chan as he accidentally enters the infamous Kowloon Walled City – a dangerous Chinese enclave riddled with gang crime and corruption. He soon discovers order amidst the chaos and learns important life lessons from the inhabitants as they resist an invasion.
