The UK’s National Cinema Day will return across two days for its 2026 edition, after it was paused last year.
National Cinema Weekend will take place on September 5-6 across the UK, offering tickets at £4 for any film, format, and seat. 530 UK cinemas are currently confirmed to participate, with more expected to join.
The late summer, one-day initiative launched in its current incarnation in 2022. It offered cinema-goers across the UK and Ireland the chance to watch films at discounted prices.
The format was first launched by industry body Cinema First in 2022, supported by the Film Distributors’ Association and the UK Cinema Association, and in 2024 posted over 1 million admissions at 630 venues. It was inspired by the original UK “National Cinema Day” held in June 1996, a period when attendances were dipping, with tickets selling for one pound.
New films on release on September 4 include True Brit’s The Death Of Robin Hood, Universal’s The Incomer and Sony’s Gail Daughtry And The Celebrity Sex Pass.
Phil Clapp, chief executive of the UK Cinema Association and director of Cinema First, said: “Following the success of National Cinema Day, we’re excited to be extending the celebration to the entire weekend, giving cinemagoers greater flexibility to plan their visits, and the opportunity to watch the widest possible range of films, suiting all tastes.”
