EXCLUSIVE: China’s Rediance has landed international sales rights to Zhong Kaifeng’s Atlantic Rhapsody, ahead of its world premiere in the main competition of Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF).
The Chinese filmmaker’s feature debut is a fantasy drama about a supermarket clerk who starts to experience strange occurrences after accidentally boiling the store’s shark alive. Compelled by forces beyond his understanding, he returns to his hometown Shenyang after two decades where everything converges into a symphonic echo of history, memory, fantasy and reality.
The cast includes Yin Fang from Cannes 2017 selection Walking Past The Future, Wang Yitong (Journey To The West), Li Xueqin (Take Off) and Huang Mee (Streetwise, Ripples Of Life).
Producers are Wang Tianxiao and Zheng Jing from A Song Sung Blue, which played in Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes in 2023. Key crew include director of photography Hao Jiayue, editor Huang Bingjie and production designer Liu Lian. The film is backed by Xiamen Skypeak Culture and Shanghai Skypeak Culture.
Director Zhong co-wrote the script with Wu Linfeng, whose credits as a writer/director include From Tomorrow On, I Will, which premiered at the Berlinale and won the grand prize at Jeonju in 2019. Zhong’s creative work encompasses film, experimental music and fiction.
Atlantic Rhapsody is one of 12 films set to world premiere in the main competition of SIFF’s Golden Goblet Awards. The 28th edition of the festival is set to run from June 12-21.
