Venice competitor now titled Warrior of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale.

Optimum Releasing has taken all UK rights to upcoming epic Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale (formerly titled just Seediq Bale) from Fortissimo Films.

Taiwan’s Wei Te-sheng (Cape No. 7) directs and producers are John Woo, Terence Chang and Jimmy Huang.

The epic will have its world premiere in Competition at Venice.

The deal was negotiated by Fortissimo executive vice president of sales Nicole Mackey with Optimum Head of UK Acquisitions Alison Meese and Acquisitions Consultant for StudioCanal Berenice Fugard.

The $25m film was produced by the ARS Film Production & Central Motion Picture Corporation.

Ten years in preparation, the film includes a cast of 15,000 and a crew of 400.

The cast features Da-Ching, Umin Boya, Landy Wen, Lo Mei-ling, Japanese star Ando Masanobu and Taiwanese star Vivian Hsu,

The film, set in 1930s Formosa (now Taiwan) tells the true story of the Wushe Incident in which Seediq tribe warrior Mouna Rudo led his people to rebel against the Japanese occupation. 

Fortissimo’s Mackey said, “It’s a thrill to know that Optimum will be giving their marketing and distribution expertise to this epic movie which has an extraordinary talent line-up.”

Producer Jimmy Huang added: “We are thrilled that our film has strongly resonated with the prestigious UK company Optimum and that  they moved quickly to acquire it in advance of  the world premiere in Venice”.
