The Orphanage producers are making another Spanish-language horror project; DeaPlaneta will handle sales.

Major Spanish producers Rodar Y Rodar are set to make another Spanish-language horror project called Scars, following the huge success of their film The Orphanage.

Currently in the early stages of development, the film will be directed by Sergi Viscaino, based on a script by Daniel Padro, and will tell the story of a group of university students, led by Angela, who set up camp in an abandoned town to investigate possible paranormal activities. Things take a turn for the worse when a ghost harasses them, but only Angela’s sister Diana can see it.

Rodar Y Rodar head honchos Joaquin Padro and Mar Targarona will be in charge of the production, while leading local outfit DeaPlaneta has picked up international sales rights to the film and will be promoting it to buyers at Cannes.

Rodar Y Rodar are horror specialist having already produced Juan Antonio Bayona’s The Orphanage, which was the highest grossing Spanish film of all time at the local box office ($36m) back in 2007, and they followed that with Guillem Morales’ film Julia’s Eyes, currently in post, which DeaPlaneta will also be selling at Cannes. Both films were backed by horror master Guillermo Del Toro.

Other major English-language projects on Rodar Y Rodar’s future slate include screwball comedy The Barcelona Connection, which is attracting a lot of interest from producers and financiers in the US and UK, and The Perfect Assassin, which is a $15m Spanish Civil War drama, directed by Andrew Douglas from a script by writer-in-demand Paul Webb (Lincoln, Four Knights, Selma).
