Major Korean distributor Showbox Mediaplex has acquired Wong Kar-wai's My Blueberry Nights for South Korea, in tandem with CM Entertainment, formerly known as Inmoa Entertainment.

Saya Huddlestone, international sales director at StudioCanal, struck the deal with Chris H. Lee, vice president of acquisitions at Showbox, and Thomas Kim, president of CM Entertainment.

The Norah Jones and Jude Law starrer, which opened Cannes earlier this year, will hit theatres in Korea this winter as The Weinstein Company's version with 15 minutes edited out.

The film is due for release either after TWC releases it in North America or after Jan 1, whichever comes first.

'Actually, we would like to open the film in Korea in December. It's a good film for that season, but more importantly, they're opening it in France on Nov 30 on 300 screens, which means there will be pirate copies in circulation by the time we get to put it in theatres here,' said Lee.

She added: ' Studio Canal is a pleasure to work with. They understand what a distributor needs to prepare a good marketing campaign - and when.'

CM Entertainment launched itself as a buyer at the European Film Market earlier this year as Inmoa Entertainment. 'Inmoa is originally an IT specialty firm. We've created a separate body in CM to concentrate more on local production as well as distribution,' says Kim.
