Sony Pictures Classics (SPC) has acquired North American and other territory rights to Jacques Audiard’s Palme d’Or frontrunner A Prophet from Celluloid Dreams.

The deal brings the number of official selection films acquired by SPC to three, following the pre-Cannes buys of Michael Haneke’s The White Ribbon from Les Films Du Losange and festival closer Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky from Wild Bunch.

Meanwhile, speculation continued to swirl around the fate of Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium Of Dr Parnassus, which remains unsold to North America and screened out of competition here.

Cinetic Media holds North American rights and screened the fantasy, which famously stars Heath Ledger in his last role, to buyers in Los Angeles days before Cannes. Cinetic is also representing North American rights on Alejandro Amenabar’s Agora, starring Rachel Weisz.
