Buddy Squires will receive the International Documentary Association's (IDA) Outstanding Documentary Cinematography Award at the 23rd Annual IDA Awards Gala Benefit in Los Angeles on Dec 7.

Squires' credits number into the eighties and include The Statue Of Liberty, which earned him an Oscar nomination in 1986, as well as Civil War, Scottsboro: An American Tragedy, New York: A Documentary Film, Jazz, and, more recently, Nanking.

'I learned that every documentary is a process of discovery,' Squires said. 'You have to recognise and be open to every possibility, each moment of every day, because you never know what is going to happen next.

'The choices you make about the way light falls on someone's face, composition and camera angles can speak louder than words.'
