Swedish film Elina, As If I Didn't Exist picked up the top Golden Moon of Valencia prize in the feature film competition of Spain's Cinema Jove International Film Festival (June 14-21), which also hosted tributes to Thomas Vinterberg, Richard Lester and Piotr Dumala.
Director Klaus Haro (pictured) took home the Euros 18,000 purse, but the jury also recignised three other films, including a special jury prize to Lynne Ramsay's Morvern Callar (UK) and special mentions to actor Ernesto Mahieux for Matteo Garrone's I'Imbalsamatore (It), and to DP Porsan Rouqezu for Jeffrey Erbach's The Nature Of Nicholas (Can).
Jury president Thierry Forte, chief of French production house DMVB, commended the high quality of the line-up considering "the international panorama, where the crisis in television financing has meant a general decrease in production."
Meanwhile, Spanish director Carlos Molinero, president of the parallel short film competition jury, urged festival director Rafael Maluendo to consider including alternative formats to 35mm and a section for animated shorts in future editions.
Benjamin Kempf's Exit (Switz) and Ham Tran's Ngay Gio (USA) shared the short film competition's top prize, while silver went to Adam Guzinski's Antychryst (Pol) and bronze to Sergio Umansky's Aqui Iba El Himno (Mex). Among other prizes, Phil Traill's Dangle (UK) won the Canal Plus award which includes broadcast rights across Europe.
Finally, a simultaneous four-day international market matched more than 600 shorts with some 50-plus accredited participants including short film buyers, producers, directors, sales agents and festival programmers.
