The UK Film Council hasunveiled the list of cinemas set to participate in the roll out of its DigitalScreen Network (see full list of cinemas, below).

TheCouncil is spending £11.7m of its National Lottery funding to install digitalfilm projectors and related equipment in 209 cinemas (on 238 screens) acrossEngland, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The first cinemas in the networkwill start programming screenings later this year.

Thescheme appears to have been embraced by cinema operators of all different sizesfrom multiplexes through to small, single screen arthouse cinemas - with a widespread throughout the UK.

Forexample, every single one of multiplex outfit Cineworld's 35 sites will befitted with a Council digital projector, while 35 of the 42 UGC sites (soon tobe rebranded Cineworld) have signed up. Arthouse cinemas to sign up includeCornwall's Plaza Cinema in Truro, TheatrMwldan in Cardigan, Wales, and the Perth Playhouse in Scotland.

Inreturn for the new equipment, the cinemas have committed to providing morescreening time to showing a greater selection of more specialised (ienon-Hollywood), classic, and foreign language movies.

TheCouncil will rule exactly what constitutes specialised cinema and will monitorthe scheme to ensure that cinemas are playing the agreed number of specialisedfilms.

TheCouncil says that, as a result, there will be an increase in specialised filmscreenings of up to 75,000 in the first year alone, rising to 165,000 in fouryears from now. It also predicted thatthe overall number of cinema visits in the UK could be raised by up to 4million, thanks to the more diverse range of films available to audiences.

Inall, around 320 cinemas applied for digital screening equipment, with some 80unsuccessful in their application. They will have the option to buy into theservices provided by the Digital ScreenNetwork and its management company Arts Alliance Digital Cinema. The Council used criteriaincluding access, extra programming time, the geographical spread of cinemas,marketing plans to choose the winning cinemas.

PeterBuckingham, head of distribution and exhibition at the UK Film Council said:I'm incredibly pleased by the way that the exhibition side has stepped up tothe plate." He said that the scheme would lead to a 'potential sea change' inexhibition in the UK, allowing audiences to see a wider range of cinema rightacross the country.
