Will Ferrell enjoyed the second best opening of his career as Paramount's ice skating comedy Blades Of Glory launched at number one on an estimated $33m.

Ferrell and co-star Jon Heder play banned rival skaters who learn the only way to get back into the sport is to compete as a pair. Amy Poehler and Will Arnett also star. Ferrell's best opening remains Talladega Nights, which opened on Aug 4 2006 on $47m.

Opening in second place was Buena Vista's animated family title Meet The Robinsons, which took in $25.1m and features the voice talent of Angela Bassett and Daniel Hansen, among others. The film's wide release encompassed more than 600 Real D-equipped 3-D digital theatres, which account for more than one-sixth of the total release.

Overall box office fell slightly compared to the same weekend last year, as the top 12 titles dropped 13% and combined for $115m. According to reports, cinema attendance has risen 4% in the year-to-date.

There were no other newcomers in the top 10. Warner Bros' smash 300 fell one place to third on $11.2m and now stands at $179.7m after four weekends, while last weekend's champion TMNT dropped three place to fourth on $9.2m for $38.4m.

The comedy Wild Hogs ranks fifth on $135.4m for Buena Vista after five, Paramount's conspiracy thriller Shooter tumbled three places to sixth and stands at $27.2m after two, and Sony's thriller Premonition held firm in seventh place and has amassed $39.3m after three.

Miramax's thriller The Lookout with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Jeff Daniels opened in 11th place on just over $2m on 955 screens, a disappointing screen average of about $2,100.

Next weekend's wide releases for the Easter holiday are: Fox's family comedy Firehouse Dog starring Josh Hutcherson; Miramax's true-lie caper The Hoax with Richard Gere; Sony's family comedy sequel Are We Done Yet' starring Ice Cube and Nia Long; Warner Bros' horror title The Reaping with Hilary Swank; and The Weinstein Company's Quentin Tarantino-Robert Rodriguez double feature Grindhouse.
