Protagonist Pictures, the new UK-based sales company formed by Film4, Ingenious, and Vertigo, has hired Charlotte Van Weede as its head of sales.

The company's CEO Ben Roberts announced the appointment of Van Weede, who joins from HanWay Films, where she is director of sales and distribution.

Prior to joining HanWay in 2007, Van Weede was VP of international sales at Summit International and sales director at Intermedia Films.

She will join Protagonist on May 1, as the company gears up for its official launch in Cannes.

'Charlotte was the perfect choice for this new and challenging role, not only because she has a wealth of experience and is well respected in the industry, but because she brings a fresh vision to sales that reflects the kinds of films we're handling,' said Roberts.

'Protagonist offers me the unique opportunity to build a new brand in the market and approach sales from a more entrepreneurial perspective,' added Van Weede. 'It's going to be a fantastic challenge to help create a new business, leveraged off the strengths of the three founding partners.'

Protagonist's Cannes sales slate includes Tom Shankland's The Day, Nicolas Winding Refn's Bronson, Rupert Wyatt's The Trail and Alexis Do Santos' Unmade Beds. Additions to the slate will be announced before the Cannes Market.
