Chris Noonan, director of Miss Potter and Babe, is preparing to shoot his next film, the $16m (A$20m) Australia-South Africa co-production Zebras.

The original screenplay by David Williamson (The Year Of Living Dangerously, Phar Lap) is based on an Apartheid-era true story of Paul Krieje, an Afrikaaner who coached a Soweto football team composed of both black and white players.

Developed by Jim McElroy (Picnic At Hanging Rock, The Year Of Living Dangerously) and Marta McElroy, the film will be produced by Sydney-based McElroy and McElroy alongside Michael Donovan of Halifax-based DHX.

Donovan produced Roger Spottiswoode's Shake Hands With The Devil, which world premiered Sunday night at TIFF to standing ovations.

Speaking exclusively to Screen International, Donovan said, 'It's the best script I've read in 28 years in the business.'

He said a South African co-production deal is in negotiation. Casting for the lead is underway with an eye to begin production in Soweto early in 2008.
