From 2011, films seeking selection for the Berlinale’s Generation sidebar, which focuses on children’s and youth titles, must be European premieres.

“An exception will be made for the exploitation in the film’s own country of origin,” Generation’s section head Maryanne Redpath told Screen.

“On the one hand, Generation is aligning its regulations to the standard for the Panorama and Forum, which will make a lot of things much easier.

“Moreover, as experience shows, a festival like the Berlinale can offer more when a film is really fresh — the marketing chances, interest from the press and the professional audience increase enormously.”
