Goteborg to host master classes from Scherfig, Lanthimos

Seminars on future of VoD and digital film marketing to also take place at 35th edition of festival, which runs Jan 27-Feb 6.

Lone Scherfig and Yorgos Lanthimos are among the directors holding master classes during the 35th edition of the Goteborg International Film Festival (GIFF), taking place Jan 27-Feb 6.

Other master classes taking place include Michael Winterbottom, recipient of this year’s Honorary Dragon Award, and 3D animator Chris Landreth who will be on hand to present his upcoming projects.

The Nordic Film Market will again be held during the festival, running Feb 2-5, which will include a discussion on the future of Video on Demand moderated by journalist Andrea Reuter and featuring Frederik Stege, head of VoD, TrustNordisk, and Efe Cacarel, CEO and founder of Mubi.

A seminar on digital film marketing from London-based marketing agency Think Jam will also be held during the Nordic Film Market, along with the Nordic Film Lab offering a networking forum for upcoming Scandinavian filmmakers.

Mikael Marcimain’s political thriller Call Girl, Jan Troell’s historical drama Dom Över Död Man and Bille August’s biography of the 20th Century painters Marie and P.S. Krøyer, Marie Krøyer, are the three works in progress to be presented at this year’s edition, in addition to the 19 works in progress presented during the Nordic Film Market.

As part of this year’s Arabic Focus, there will also be a seminar on The Three Disappearances of Soad Hosni, Rania Stephan’s documentary based on iconic Egyptian actress Soad Hosni, and as part of this year’s Danish Focus, there will be a discussion on the future of Danish film with a focus on fiction vs documentary, moderated by journalist and critic Jan Lumholdt.

GIFF opens on Jan 27 with Axel Petersén’s TIFF Award winner Avalon, with a sneak preview of The Descendants taking place on Jan 26.
