Summer shoot for Arnold’s first film in US, Protagonist to sell in Cannes
BAFTA and Oscar-winning British filmmaker Andrea Arnold will shoot her next film this summer in the US, with a production team comprising Parts & Labor, Pulse Films, Man Down Pictures and Film4.
Protagonist Pictures will introduce Cannes buyers to the auteur’s anticipated next feature, now officially titled American Honey. Casting is currently underway.
The film, also written by Arnold, will follow a teenage girl who joins a travelling magazine sales crew and gets caught up in a whirlwind of hard-partying, law-bending and young love.
In the past few years, the director has spent months travelling around the US immersing herself in the world of a real mag-crew.
Producers are Lars Knudsen and Jay Van Hoy of New York-based Parts & Labor.Also producing are Thomas Benski and Lucas Ochoa from Pulse Films, alongside Pouya Shahbazian of Man Down Pictures. Film4 developed the film with Arnold and is also backing it.
Arnold, whose dramas Fish Tank and Red Road both played in competition in Cannes and both won the festival’s Jury Prize, will be back on the Croisette next week as head of the Critics’ Week jury.
American Honey will be her first film to shoot outside of the UK.
The acclaimed Wuthering Heights director won an Oscar for 2003 short Wasp.
