Yamada’s Tokyo Story remake back on track

Japanese studio Shochiku is attending EFM with Yoji Yamada’s long-gestating homage to Tokyo Story, which is now back on track and scheduled to start shooting in March.

Entitled Tokyo Kazoku, the remake of the Yasujiro Ozu classic was initially scheduled to start shooting in March 2011, but was delayed by the earthquake which struck on March 11. Yamada also decided to rewrite the script to reflect the impact of the earthquake.

Shochiku has also announced the cast for the project, some of which has changed since it was announced in late 2010. New additions include Isao Hashizume (Space Battleship Yamato) and Kazuko Yoshiyuki (Departures).

Previously announced cast includes Satoshi Tsumabuki, Yu Aoi, Yui Natsukawa and Masahiko Nishimura. The film, which also celebrates Yamada’s 50th year as director, is a contemporary take on Ozu’s classic about Japanese family life.

Shochiku is also selling new titles from Kenta Fukasaku and Departures director Yojiro Takita. Starring Chinese supermodel Hu Bing, Fukasaku’s Ken & Mary is about a Japanese businessman searching for his daughter in Malaysia.

Takita’s Tenchi Meisatsu is a historical drama about the samurai who created the Japanese calendar. Junichi Okada and Aoi Miyazaki head the cast.
