Delegates’ growing concerns about possible disruption to Europa Cinemas’ annual conference in Athens from further general strikes and street demonstrations have prompted the Paris-based network to cancel this year’s which was due to be held from Nov 17-20.
The conference would have consisted of four days of screenings, debates and workshops on such issues as audience renewal - focusing on young and school audiences (the Net generation) – and the transition to digital cinema within European distribution and exhibition.
In addition, an information session had been planned on the MEDIA Programme’s support for the digitisation of cinemas, activities under the auspices of MEDIA Mundus, and cooperation with Eurimages, the European Parliament’s LUX Prize, and 27 Times Cinema; and Mark Cousins had been due to present extracts from his epic 15-hour documentary series The Story Of Film: An Odyssey.
Around 500 professionals - exhibitors, distributors, producers and sales agents from all over Europe and partner countries – had been expected to attend.
In the official invitation sent out earlier this month, Europa Cinemas had recommended that delegates ask their travel agent or airline about the refund policy regarding cancelled or delayed flights “in the event of possible disruption of flights to Athens.”
