Beowulf ruled the world at the weekend as Robert Zemeckis' animated adaptation of the epic English poem launched at number one in North America with an estimated $28.1m haul that complemented the table topping overseas tally of $17m.

Well over one-third of the domestic gross came from 3D screens through Real D and IMAX. Read D accounted for $8m from 638 sites and IMAX claimed $3.6m from 84 screens.

Ray Winstone plays a Danish warrior charged with killing a monster that has terrorised the land. Angelina Jolie, Anthony Hopkins and Crispin Glover also star.

In their third weekends, DreamWorks-Paramount's Bee Movie and Universal's American Gangster consolidated well in second and third places.

Bee Movie's $14.3m gross put it within easy reach of $100m on $93.9m, while American Gangster crossed the milestone after $13.2m raised the tally to $100.9m.

The fantasy drama Mr Magorium's Wonder Emporium with Natalie Portman and Dustin Hoffman released in North America through Fox Walden, launched in fifth place on just over $10m.

No Country For Old Men, which Miramax handles domestically, surged eight places to seventh in its second weekend and raised the cumulative gross to $4.9m.

UA's Lions For Lambs fell three places to ninth in its second weekend and has amassed a lowly $111.6m.

The romantic epic Love In The Time Of Cholera opened through New Line in 10th place on $1.9m. It stars Javier Bardem, Benjamin Bratt and Giovanna Mezzogiorno.

Samuel Goldwyn Films/Destination opened Richard Kelly's Donnie Darko follow-up Southland Tales on 63 screens and reported a $116,550 gross over three days that raised the cumulative total to $ 133,896.

The film combines conspiracy thriller, social satire and comedy elements and stars The Rock, Sean William Scott, Michelle Gellar and Justin Timberlake.

Next weekend's wide releases are: Buena Vista's fantasy Enchanted with Amy Adams and Susan Sarandon; Fox's video game adaptation Hitman starring Timothy Olyphant; MGM/Dimension's horror tale The Mist; Sony's drama This Christmas; and Warner Bros' August Rush starring Freddie Highmore, Keri Russell and Jonathan Rhys Meyers.
