Both films launched on Monday (Aug 27) and the results are strong: The Amazing Spider-Man grossed an estimated $5.46m through Sony Pictures Releasing International while Warner Bros Pictures International reported a $4.45m debut for The Dark Knight Rises.

Sony’s webslinger was active in 2,515 venues and the result pushed the worldwide tally past the $700m mark as the international running total climbed to more than $446m.

The third entry in The Dark Knight Rises played on roughly 2,400 sites. Warner Bros sources said this was the second biggest 2D launch in the territory for the studio behind the Harry Potter finale.

The third entry in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy has grossed more than $524m internationally and more than $946m worldwide.

IMAX screens generated approximately $1m for both titles combined in a roughly even split.
