Summit Entertainment has taken North American rights to Mark Palansky's fantasy drama Penelope starring Christina Ricci, James McAvoy and Reese Witherspoon.

The film slots into Summit's nascent domestic distribution pipeline and looks likely to be a 2008 release. The first film to go is expected to be the thriller P2 in November.

Penelope was one of the hot tickets of Toronto 2006; IFC Films bought it last year but it became available again when IFC opted to refocus on more specialised fare.

It stars Christina Ricci as a cursed young woman who sets out to find her destiny. Witherspoon also produced.

'Penelope is the kind of film we at Summit want to be in business with,' Summit's co-chairman and chef executive officer Rob Friedman said. 'It has a great cast, a very strong creative team and it is the kind of material that will allow our marketing group to really shine.'

Andrew Matosich and Karen Barna negotiated the deal for Summit with ICM and Karen Robson and Matt Cooper of Pryor Cashman represented Stone Village.
