Beowulf destroyed the competition as the animated epic saga grossed an estimated $17m through Warner Bros Pictures International (WBPI).

The film drew approximately 1.7million admissions from 2,500 prints in 13 markets led by a $4.4m (£2.2m) second place launch in the UK in 552 sites that included previews

Beowulf ranked top in virtually all its Asian markets, powered by an excellent $3.7m (KRW 3.4bn) debut in South Korea including previews on 159 nationwide prints.

Elsewhere the film grossed $2.1m (Eu1.45m) from 400 prints in Italy, $2m (Eu1.35m) including previews from 710 prints in Germany, and an excellent number one launch in Taiwan that accounted for approximately 80% top five market share on $926,000 (NT$ 29.9m) including previews from 133 prints.

Thailand generated a $788,000 (Baht 24.9m) number one debut from 128 nationwide prints that claimed 81% top five market share, the Philippines produced $665,000 (Php 28.5m) from 51 nationwide prints, Hong Kong produced a number one $539,000 (HK$4.2m) launch from 45 nationwide prints, and Singapore delivered a number one $538,000 (S$783,000) debut from 50 nationwide prints.

The Orphanage stayed at the top of the Spanish charts for the sixth consecutive weekend through Warner Bros Spain as $1.5m (Eu1.05m) raised the running total to an extraordinary $31.7m (Eu21.9m).

Figures for last weekend's champion Om Shanti Om were unavailable from Eros International at time of writing.

Universal's crime saga American Gangster grossed $14m through UPI in 1,471 sites in 14 territories to raise the early tally to $14.5m.

The film scored Denzel Washington's biggest debut in the UK with a number one $5.1m (£2.5m) launch from 410 locations, and opened number one in Germany and France on $3m from 366 sites and $3.4m from 365, respectively.

American Gangster took $320,000 from 63 sites in Austria where it is neck-and-neck for number one with Beowulf. The Netherlands produced $670,000 from 73 for second place behind local champion All Is Love.

Elizabeth: The Golden Age added $6m from 1,590 sites in 13 territories for $22m, fired by a number one Australian debut on $1.2m from 221 locations and a number one New Zealand launch on $170,000 from 58. The Russian debut was expected to rank number one however results were unavailable.

The Bourne Ultimatum crossed $200m as $3.3m from 900 venues in 29 territories raised the cumulative total to $202.4m. The thriller opened in China on $975,000 from 150 sites and added $1.5m from 304 in the second weekend in Japan for $7m. Ultimatum is expected to overtake the $205m combined international gross of the first two films next weekend.

Elsewhere The Kingdom added $1.3m from 762 sites in 30 territories for $31m, while Atonement added $1.1m from 425 in 11 for $28.9m. Knocked Up stands at $68.6m and Brazilian co-production Tropa De Elite has amassed $10.7m.

The Heartbreak Kid grossed $7.1m through PPI from 1,856 locations in 37 territories for $51.5m. Highlights were $1.7m in Italy for $5.4m and $1.6m in Germany for $8.4m.

Stardust added $3.6m from 2,022 locations in 60 territories for $88m, and the fantasy adventure crossed $25 in its firth weekend in the UK.

Bee Movie raised its running total by $2.2m from 642 venues in five territories for $11.2m. The animated film opened number one in Poland on $1m including from 80 screens.

Fox International reported a $5.7m second international weekend for Lions For Lambs from 2,700 screens in 53 markets that raised the tally to $19.7m.

The anti-war polemic added $1.3m from 300 screens in Spain for $4m, $606,000 from 307 in Germany for 1.9m, and $525,000 from 375 in the UK for $2.6m.

Die Hard 4.0 added $1.1m from its Chinese launch to raise the overseas tally to more than $245m. The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising grossed $500,000 from 1,250 screens in 22 markets for $19.3m.

Ratatouille crossed the $600m mark at the global box office at the weekend as the film added $5.4m from 3,707 screens in 30 territories through Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International (WDSMPI).

The family tale became the industry's 37th title to cross $600m worldwide and Disney's ninth release to do so. It stands at $602m worldwide and $396m overseas, making it the 28th biggest international release.

Weekend highlights were led by $1.8m from 500 screens in the sixth weekend in the UK for $46.3m, and $1.2m from 896 in the seventh weekend in Germany for $44.1m.

Ratatouille generated $732,000 in Italy from 585 in the fifth weekend for $25m and has now overtaken the lifetime total of The Incredibles.

The Game Plan grossed $1.9m from 780 in eight countries for $13.9m, powered once again by Mexico where the family title added $563,000 from 366 in the sixth weekend for $8.1m.

WDSMPI German acquisition The Three Investigators And The Secret Of Skeleton Island grossed $1.2m from 676 sites in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and stands at $3.5m.

Resident Evil: Extinction grossed $3.7m for $84.7m overall and took $3.4m from 1,245 screens in 31 markets through Sony Pictures Releasing International (SPRI) for a $50.6m SPRI cumulative total.

Surf's Up scored a $230,000 number one Norwegian launch as the animated film added $1.9m overall from 1,765 screens in 29 markets for $79.2m.

Saawariya fell massively following last weekend's spectacular launch in India, grossing $630,000 for a $17m running total.

Mandate International's Saw IV added $3m for $37m.
