BVI's Scary Movie 3 was the hit film at the box office in its opening weekend, taking A$3,011,921 from 305 screens to achieve a screen average of A$9,875. The result fell about A$70,000 short of last weekend's opening performance by 20th Century Fox's Master And Commander: The Far Side Of The World, which was on about 20 more screens. The Russell Crowe vehicle got pushed down to second spot this time around and Roadshow's Elf held on to third position.

Four other new films made it into the charts, the strongest performer being UIP's Love Actually, which sold A$722,512 worth of tickets to 204 screens to nail the fourth spot on previews. Looney Tunes: Back In Action took A$646,946 from 228 screens to claim the fifth spot, and the latest Dumb & Dumber took A$103,084 off 72 screens to land in the twelfth position. Both these films are Roadshow releases. The other fresh face was Lost In Translation, which took A$81,416 from 32 screens, also on previews for UIP.
