Avatar and Up honoured at the Visual Effects Society awards which took place in Los Angeles last night

Avatar was the big winner at the 8th Visual Effects Society (VES) awards, picking up six awards including outstanding visual effects and best single visual effect of the year.

James Cameron was also honoured with the VES lifetime achievement award, whilst Walt Disney and Pixar presidentDr. Ed Catmull picked up the Georges Méliès Award for pioneering.

Up was the other success story of the night, with three awards including outstanding animation. Meanwhile, Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes walked away the the outsanding supporting visual effects award.

The annual event, which took place in Los Angeles last night (28 February) recognizes outstanding visual effects in more than twenty categories of film, animation, television, commercials and video games.
