The fourth entry in Paramount’s Mission: Impossible action franchise climbed two places after expanding wide just before the holiday weekend and added an estimated $26.5m for $58.9m.
Steven Spielberg’s period drama War Horse opened on Dec 25 and according to reports grossed in the region of $7.5m through Disney-DreamWorks. Full results will emerge this week.
Warner Bros’ Sherlock Holmes sequel fell once place and has grossed $77m after two weekends while Fox’s Alvin And The Chimpmunks sequel ranks third on $50.3m, also after two weekends.
Sony’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (pictured) remake from David Fincher starring Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara and Stellan Skarsgaard led a trio of heavyweight new releases as it debuted at number four on $13m, rising to $21.4m since the Dec 21 opening day.
Paramount and Sony’s The Adventures Of Tintin – from the dream team filmmaking triumvirate of director Spielberg and his fellow producers Peter Jackson and Kathleen Kennedy – arrived in fifth place on $9.1m, climbing to $17.1m from the Dec 21 release day. Cameron Crowe’s We Bought A Zoo starring Matt Damon opened at number six through Fox on $7.8m.
Paramount/GK Films’ Hugo is hanging on to a top ten berth in tenth place and stands at $43.7m after five weekends. Angelina Jolie’s feature directorial debut In The Land Of Blood And Honey opened on $18,100 from three venues through FilmDistrict for a so-so $6,033 per-screen average.
Paramount’s Young Adult has grossed $6.9m after three weekends and plays in 987 theatres.
The Descendants stands at $32m through Fox Searchlight after six; The Artist $2.4m through TWC after five and expanded from 17 theatres to 167; Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy $1.8m through Focus after three and expanded from 16 to 53; My Week With Marilyn $6.9m through TWC after five.
A Dangerous Method has grossed $1m through SPC after five and expanded from 17 to 58 theatres; Shame $1.5m through Searchlight after four; J. Edgar $36.1m through Warner Bros after seven; and 50/50 $35m through Summit Entertainment after 13 weekends in release.
