Summit’s Twilight Saga: Eclipse was easily the highest grossing independent film worldwide in 2010 on $698.5m, according to a new index released by the Independent Film & Television Alliance (IFTA).
In second place some way behind was Resident Evil: Afterlife on $270.7m followed by The Expendables on $228.5m, Red on $160.6m and The Book Of Eli on $158.5m.
English-language films dominate the list with 37 entries, followed by 13 from Japan as the largest contributor of non-English language releases.
Japan’s three top earners combined for close to $300m and the top title was The Borrower Arrietty (Karigurashi No Arrietty) in ninth place on $114.1m.
Brazil’s Portuguese-language smash Elite Squad 2 (Tropa De Elite 2) – the biggest film ever release in Latin America – finished 25th on $61.5m.
France’s top entry was Little White Lies (Les Petits Mouchoirs) in 34th place on $47.3m while Benvenuti Al Sud flew the flag for Italy in 43rd on $41.5m.
IFTA compiled the top-50 list based on data from Rentrak Box Office Essentials.
