EXCLUSIVE: The distributor has secured North American rights from WME Global to the topical immigration drama that premiered in Cannes Critics Week earlier this year.

Sundance Lab alumnus Jonas Carpignano directed Mediterranea, the acclaimed Italy-France-US-Germany-Qatar drama about two friends from Burkina Faso who embark on a new life in Europe after they survive a treacherous journey across the Mediterranean Sea.

The deal is timely given the saturation coverage of the current Syrian refugee crisis affecting Europe.

Mediterranea comes from a place of great personal significance to Carpignano, an Italian-American whose hails from an African American mother and Italian father from Rome.
