Running in the Wide Angle — Documentary competition, this first feature follows the titular young nomad in Inner Mongolia who finds the grasslands too small for his ambitions and yet chose to return to his roots after working on a cruise ship. It is produced by China’s Xu Xiaofei with French co-producer Fabrice Morin. Chinese director Yang has made more than 20 mid-length documentaries about painter Liu Xiaodong, such as Your Friends and Borders, over a span of 18 years.

Dir Isabella Lam Lok-hin
Produced by Twilight Of The Warriors: Walled In director Soi Cheang, this first feature from Lam premieres in the Vision — Asia competition and revolves around a computer programmer who is forced to confront his father’s long-past tragic death when a teenager shows up claiming to be his half-brother. Lokman Yeung (Mad Fate), Hedwig Tam (Montages Of A Modern Motherhood) and veteran Maggie Shiu head the cast. Funding comes from Hong Kong’s Film Development Fund through the First Feature Film Initiative. Lam’s 2012 short On Sleepless Roads, The Sleepless Goes won the best creativity award at Hong Kong’s Fresh Wave International Short Film Festival.

Chinese director Chen, who won the short film Palme d’Or for The Water Murmurs in 2022, will premiere her debut feature in Vision — Asia competition. Shot in Harbin, the atmospheric drama is set in the near future where a frozen landscape mirrors the inner lives of its characters including an ambitious dancer and an engineer searching for lost memories. The cast is led by Zhao Tian’ai (Zoom In, Zoom Out) and Chen Xiao. Executive producer is Nai An, a longtime collaborator of Chinese filmmaker Lou Ye.

Following the phenomenal success of 2025’s The Last Dance, which became Hong Kong’s biggest-ever local film with $21.7m (hk$170m), this period drama reunites Hong Kong director Chan with stars Dayo Wong, Michael Hui and Michelle Wai. Monogamy may be taken for granted in modern society, but some 60 years ago the age-old legal code that allowed concubinage was still in effect. The film is set against a historic turning point that brings about the monogamous marriage reform. The cast also includes Karena Lam and British actor Iain Glen, whose credits include HBO series Game Of Thrones.

Starring Raymond Lam (Twilight Of The Warriors: Walled In) and Jennifer Yu (Double Happiness), this family comedy follows a new mother who champions joyful education until she is driven by peer pressure to adopt unorthodox measures for enrolling her child at a prestigious school. The project is supported by the Film Production Financing Scheme (Relaxation Plan) from Hong Kong’s Film Development Fund, with Catherine Kwan and Kevin Tse as producers. It marks the first feature of Hong Kong screenwriter Ho, whose writing credits include A Man And A Woman and Cold War 1994.

Traces Of Justice

Chinese hitmaker Chen of Detective Chinatown fame turns to the career of pioneering forensic evidence expert Cui Daozhi for his latest crime drama. Starring Zhang Yi (Full River Red) and Ma Li (Article 20), the film follows a forensic investigator over five decades as he traces the faintest of clues to solve seemingly perfect crimes. It is produced by Chen’s As One Pictures and led China’s National Day holi­day box office (October 1-8), taking $63.1m (rmb423m).

We Are Born Good

Fresh from Toronto’s Discovery section, this first feature has scored nine nominations at the upcoming Golden Horse Awards, including best film, best new director and acting nods for Yeung Wai Lun and Chung Suet Ying. The film centres on a struggling actress and a local joint owner who get into a cycle of revenge when the wrong food is served; it is backed by Hong Kong’s First Feature Film Initiative. Producer Patricia Cheng is a collaborator of director Sylvia Chang. Screenwriter-turned-director Yeung’s writing credits include 2022 Busan title Hong Kong Family.
