The new festival’s 27 features includes the world premiere of music documentary The Night Holds Me Back.

The inaugural Curaçao International Film Festival Rotterdam will open March 29 with the Caribbean premiere of Kevin Macdonald’s documentary Marley. Macdonald will be on hand to introduce the film, an in-depth portrait of Bob Marley made with the participation of his family.

The festival’s programme will include 27 features (both fictional and documentary) as well as 11 short films.

Other filmmakers attending with their films include Tata Amaral with Antonia; Pedro González-Rubio with Alamar; and Roberta Marquez with Rania.

The festival’s world premiere offering will be Catrien Ariens’ The Night Holds Me Back (Nochi no ke laga mi bai) anout tambú, the traditional music of Curaçao. Producers are Amsterdam-based Corona Pictures.

Films already announced include Steve McQueen’s Shame; Philippe Falardeau’s Monsieur Lazhar; and IFFR Tiger winners Thursday Till Sunday (De jueves a domingo) from Chile and Egg and Stone from China; Kenyan feature Soul Boy; Julia Murat’s award winner HISTÓRIAS que so existem quando lembradas; Australia’s Black & White & Sex; Lucas Belvaux’s IFFR opener 38 Witnesses; and Norwegian comedy King Curling.

The Caribbean Classics strand includes Suite Habana by Fernando Perez and Panman, Rhythm Of The Palms by Sander Burger.

Family films include Kikkerdril, Antonia and Who The Hell Is Juliette? There will be free educational screenings for secondary school students. Youth orchestras will also perform at special film music performances.

Locals will also get involved thorugh a short film contest that will also include jury awards with cash prizes.

The four-day event will be help at the six-screen multiplex The Cinemas, in the Otrobanda district of Willemstad.

Gregory Elias’ cultural group Fundashon Bon Intenshon is presenting the festival, which is co-organised and programmed with the International Film Festival Rotterdam.
