Hong Kong's Filmko Entertainment is starting production next Monday (June 16) on $3m action romance Star Runner, a co-production with Hong Kong-based Sil-Metropole Organisation and South Korea's Polestar.

Directed by Daniel Lee (A Fighter's Blues), the film will star Vanness Wu, from Taiwanese boy band F4, and popular Korean actress Kim Hyun Ju. The story revolves around a man trying to win a free-fighting championship.

Filmko, which is involved in production, international distribution and talent management, is becoming increasingly active as a co-producer with both Asian and European partners. It recently produced romantic drama The Floating Landscape, directed by Carol Lai Mui-suet, with Sil-Metropole, France's Rosem Films and Japan's NHK. The $1.4m film, starring Karena Lam, Ekin Cheng and Liu Ye, is currently in post-production and scheduled for an October release.

Although based in Hong Kong, Sil-Metropole has the status of a mainland film studio. Co-productions with the company are classed as co-productions with China and are therefore eligible for mainland theatrical release.

Filmko has also recently produced youth comedy Truth Or Dare: 6th Floor, Rear Flat, directed by Barbara Wong Chun-Chun, which was released last week in Hong Kong. The company is also developing DoP Arthur Wong's directorial debut, Nine Beauties.
